First things first: nothing is installed without your say so
The first time you arrive you get a banner at the bottom. Until you decide, no analytics cookie is installed. It isn't one of those decorative notices where it makes no difference what you click: if you say no, nothing is written.
Saying no is as easy as saying yes, and the site works exactly the same either way.
The two buttons do what they say. "Only what's needed" leaves your browser untouched by us. "Accept" switches on the two analytics cookies in the table below, and nothing else.
What a cookie is, in one line
A tiny file a website keeps in your browser so it can recognise you on your next visit. Some are needed for the page to work at all and others are there to count visits. We only have the second kind.
The ones we use
| Name | Who sets it | What for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | Telling one visit from another so we don't count you twice | 2 years |
| _ga_<identifier> | Google Analytics | Keeping track of your session while you move around | 2 years |
They are analytics cookies and they are third party. They are not used to show you advertising and they are not matched against any commercial profile. We have IP address anonymisation switched on.
We do not sell or share your personal information, so there is no advertising opt out to give you here: the banner is the whole of your choice, and it is the only thing on this site that writes to your browser on our behalf.
Not a cookie, but worth telling you about
We keep a note in your browser of whether you prefer the site light or dark. That is local storage, not a cookie: it never travels to a server, it identifies nobody, and its only job is to open the page the way you left it. That is why it doesn't need your permission.
What happens if you say no
Nothing. You can read all of it, join the list and write to us just the same. The only thing that changes is that we won't know you came by.
Changing your mind
Your decision is stored in your browser. To change it, clear this site's data from your browser settings and come back: we'll ask you again.
You can also block or delete cookies from your browser whenever you like. They all allow it, each in its own privacy menu. And if you'd rather cut it off at the source, Google publishes an opt out add on that turns Analytics off on every site you visit.
Where those numbers end up
Google Analytics is provided to us by Google Ireland Limited, which may process data in the United States under the safeguards European law requires. There is more detail in the privacy policy.
The rules behind the banner
If you are in the United Kingdom, asking first is required by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, and the regulator is the Information Commissioner's Office. If you are in Ireland, it is required by the ePrivacy Regulations 2011, and the regulator is the Data Protection Commission.
If you are in the United States, there is no general federal rule that makes a site ask before it counts visits. We ask anyway. Running one honest banner for everybody is simpler than running two, and we'd rather be on the strict side of this than the clever side.
If we change something
If we add or remove cookies, we update this page and the date at the top, and we ask you again if the change calls for it.
